SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis Classics

Sega Mega Drive Classics is a retro compilation of over 50 games that includes many familiar names like Sonic, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Shinobi.  I myself had a Mega Drive and absolutely loved it when I was 8 or 9 so was really looking forward to revisiting old classics and remembering these simple classics.

When the you ‘boot up’ you are met with a cool virtual bedroom that offers a bookshelf library to browse titles to play, an old-school TV that can switch to full screen, and of course a Mega Drive to load-up each game on a virtual cartridge.

Retro Gaming Centre

I like this idea which sticks with the retro theme although I would like to be able to view each games cover art for the front and back covers, as only seeing the game side on doesn’t offer much information for the games I’m not so familiar with.

Without cover-art, descriptions, release information, bonus artwork or behind the scenes material, the overall package feels somewhat incomplete.

Streets of Rage 2

When playing any of the games you have quick save and quick load facility just by using the analogue stick and you can rewind and fast forward using the bumpers, which is perfect for the near impossible difficulty of Alex Kidd and those alike.  I also really liked the single-player challenges for 20 of the included games. The only rewards for completing them all are Achievements/Trophies, but avid gamers should enjoy them.  Separate from these Challenges, many of the games in this collection get their own Achievements/Trophies too.

Summary:

There are enough enjoyable games here with something for everyone, although some of the games could be replaced with actual “classics” such as Echo the Dolphin or Sonic & Knuckles.  This may come in another release I suppose.

If retro games are your thing then this Mega Drive Classics collection is great and well worth owning to relive the glory days.  For younger games or those less familiar with older games it may not instantly grab the attention but there is genuine fun games here for people to discover.
